On April 8, the UIDAI recognized Meghalaya for its outstanding performance in two critical Aadhaar-related activities — the mandatory biometric updates of children and the verification of adult Aadhaar enrolments. These awards were presented in New Delhi Meghalaya Aadhaar Awards and accepted by Shai Kupar War, the State’s Aadhaar nodal officer from the General Administration Department.

Recognition for Aadhaar Excellence

The recognition came as a result of the State’s consistent and efficient work in Aadhaar implementation. Meghalaya Aadhaar Awards Meghalaya’s Aadhaar team, from ground-level field staff to district officials and technical support teams, have been commended for their dedication.

Protests in Shillong Over Aadhaar Linkage

Interestingly, this recognition came a day after protests erupted in Shillong against the mandatory use of Aadhaar. On April 7, members of the Awaken India Movement held a public rally in the city to oppose the Aadhaar requirement for accessing government schemes and benefits.

While many residents see Aadhaar as a convenient tool for identification and accessing welfare schemes, a section of the population remains skeptical, citing privacy issues and fears of data misuse.
